Young Arts News at The Astley Cooper School March 2019

Our Young Arts Coordinator Pam Langdon-Pratt, Visits Organiser Barbara Mitchell and Chairman Julie Griffiths were given a very warm welcome at The Astley Cooper School in Hemel Hempstead last week.

They were met by Ravinder Padam, from their Art Department and Bret Daddow, their Assistant Headteacher and then whisked away to have tea before going to the Art Department to see some of the work.

This included meeting some Year 8 students and being able to see their work books developing their project.

Year 8 have been using work by Claes Oldenburg to inspire work in clay to produce some amazing representations of very elaborate cakes.

This American sculptor is best known for his public art installations typically featuring large replicas of everyday objects.  Another theme in his work is soft sculpture versions of everyday objects.

The purpose of our visit was to present a cheque from ADFAS for £1,130 to the school for use by the Art Department to purchase a slab roller for clay and the equipment to run it.  This money will also buy enamels so that the Year 8 students can paint their clay cakes.   We had a tour of the Department and met the other Art staff.

Our three ADFAS representatives - all retired teachers themselves - had a very enjoyable and nostalgic trip and it felt good to be back in a school and to see the fantastic work our schools do despite the funding crisis they are facing.
